Coolaney and Ballinacarrow are two villages located at the foot of the Ox Mountains, south-west of Sligo. This is a very beautiful part of the county with a mixture of farmland, woodland and open countryside. Because of the elevated location there are spectacular views of the Ox mountains, Knocknarea and the distant coastline.

Main Street

Coolaney (Irish: Cúil Áine, meaning "Áine's Corner")sits at the foot of the Ox Mountains with the river Owen Beg running through it. The remains of an old mill are located along the river walk. The village of Coolaney has no church within it, the parish church is located in Rockfield which is 1/2 mile away from Coolaney. Across from St.Jospehs Church is the National School, Rockfield N.S. An old and now disused railway line runs through the village.
Mullagh Lough to the NW of Coolaney village was once popular with local anglers but fish stocks have declined over the last decade and the fishing is not what it used to be.
The village itself is very pretty with a beautiful walk along the river. It always competes in the Tidy Towns competition for Sligo and has won several times.
Because of its proximity to Sligo it has recently become an attractive choice as a commuter destination. A number of major developments have been completed on the outskirts of the village and the population has increased rapidly. The infrastructure is improving to meet the additional demand and Coolaney looks forward to a thriving future.
